I was there about a year ago this time and despite all the news stories of rampant crime, I never saw anything sketchy. We stayed near Miracle Mile.

Earlier this year, had someone threaten to rape my significant other while we were walking down the Magnificent Mile at around 7pm. And the trains are absolutely disgusting.
But still had a good time. City is a lot of fun, tons to do, food is amazing. Would return. Practice the common sense street smarts and you'll be fine.
