I am not going to shite on this film. It seems that I remember many here being fans or perhaps I am confusing reviews I have read elsewhere.
I tried to finish this movie on at least 5 occasions. I finally finished by breaking it up over 2 days.
People seem to be infatuated (maybe a bad term) and I am wondering what the hell I missed. What do you like about this film. To me, it is not scary, suspenseful, or interesting.
I had to force myself to finish it thinking at some point there had to be something redeeming about it.
I loved the movie but I get it.
There are two scenes, that to me are so perfect, they make the entire movie.
When mom finds her daughter the following morning and the ending. The movie ended perfectly. It ended exactly the way it needed to.

I havent been as affected by a horror film since I was a kid. The whole stretch from the decap to Mom waking up in the morning is an absolute masterclass in building and prolonging tension. Everything about that stretch is perfection.
Moms face and the sound when she’s sawing off her own fricking head was seared into my brain for weeks. To be completely honest i think its like top 5 horror film of all time and i cant even watch it again lol.
The plot i think is underrated or maybe im dumb because I never anticipated the depth of the cult’s plan. Every step of the way. The movie is just so fricking evil.

Well put.
That stretch still fricks with me. The screaming. Holy shite.
Your entire post is perfect.

It’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. And outside of Ex Machina and the Witch and few others A24 films are pretty awful. It wasn’t scary or suspenseful it was only disturbing.
Although I found it suspenseful or maybe tense is a better word. I'm not entirely sure it was really meant to be either one of those things.
The demon needed a vessel and the boy had to be broken down enough so he could be susceptible to becoming that vessel. The only thing that can really protect a child (a mother) had to be stripped from him. When he got the little girl killed, she came to resent him, even hate him. By making the boy kill the little girl, they got Mom out of the way.
Like the guy above said. The movie was about pure, unambiguous evil. Nothing abstract about it.
The movie was disturbing for sure but it wasn't contrived.

Have you seen Room?
I have not. Most everything we've seen from the studio didn't land with us so there's a law of diminishing returns when it comes to giving additional A24 movies a shot.
It's the exact opposite with Blumhouse. Both my wife and I love almost every BH movie we've seen.

I think that this is why I haven't brought myself to watch it. I am sure that I would think that it was a great movie, but I just don't really want to feel dread and anxiety for 2 hours. I've watched plenty of similar toned movies that I am glad I watched, but from all I've heard and read about this movie, I just don't really want to watch it. I am sure I will some day.
I get that. There are a few films that have been in my queue for years because I just haven't wanted to subject myself to those experiences.

For people who enjoyed Hereditary, go check out The Lodge. Definitely a love letter to Hereditary.

I really enjoyed it as a horror movie but I tend to like supernatural or demonic horror rather than standard slasher stuff because it creeps me out. I also really liked the ending because it delivered the payoff.

Room is one of my favorites, and I consider myself to be a tough critic. Give it a watch. I didn't care for Hereditary either.
