I was in college and still awake when ESPN broke in to announce it. Everyone was stunned. Tyson was the immovable object and won fights before he even stepped in the ring. It was a major shocking sports event.

The only other athletes in my lifetime who had that aura that the game was over before it began were Jordan in the Finals, Montana/Brady in Super Bowls, and a few others in their primes of their sport (Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Edwin Moses, Graf, Tiger, Serena, Gretzky, and a few others. But that Tyson loss was a shocker.

It was in Tokyo but the fight was primetime in the US. The fight was on HBO, I watched live with my father and two younger brothers.

I watched it with a bunch of friends at a house when I was an undergrad. It was unbelievable…shocked that Mike went down.

Watched it at Sports Illustrated (Reggies) before it even got crowded on a Saturday night.
