One of my favorite professors once polled the class and asked if we thought it took high levels of intelligence to finish a PhD. Of course nobody wanted to insult him so we all agreed yes and then he busted out laughing and said “no, I had no idea what I wanted to do, I was good at papers, and I was consistent in going to class.” Always appreciated his candid approach and sort of humanized the more douchey professors who were the “you must call me Dr types”.
