Aaron Rodgers trade is taking shape. Jets will give up two high draft picks

PHOENIX — As the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets continue to chip away at trade negotiations for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a key holdup has emerged: Protection for draft pick compensation in the event that Rodgers doesn’t play in the 2024 NFL season.
The trade is currently orbiting a deal that would swap Rodgers for two high draft picks, according to multiple sources who spoke with Yahoo Sports. The sources characterized a deal as getting “closer” despite stiff negotiation over how those picks would stack up and whether the package would include “give back” protection for the Jets if Rodgers does not play beyond the 2023 season.
As it stands, talks are focused on the Jets dealing two picks for the Packers quarterback — one second-round pick in next month's NFL Draft, and another second-rounder in 2024 that could graduate to a first-round pick with “achievable” team performance escalators. An example of such an escalator would be if the Jets were to host a home divisional playoff game or advance to the AFC championship game. A sticking point in the talks is the Jets seeking an element of protection built into the trade, specifically one that sends some 2025 draft compensation to New York from Green Bay if Rodgers does not play in 2024 and beyond.

That’s……smart. We sure the Jets are negotiating?

Understandable request for the Jets, but that’s part of the risk/reward calculation. If you want that protection, you’re probably going to have to overpay in the event he does play in 2024.

This packers front office will screw up the picks anyways. Their dismantling of a once really good team into a bottom 5 team has actually been impressive in its incompetence.

2023 Draft would be either pick 42 or 43.
2024 Draft would likely either be a pick outside the top 50 if it’s a second rounder, or somewhere between picks 25-32 if they have enough success to trigger the escalator clause.

I was annoyed this was taking so long, but now I want to have this drawn out a little more. After Rodgers went on McAfee and blasted the GB brass, they decided to fire back. Getting my popcorn out to see AR12's response

I was told Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur would have game plan meetings to give Rodgers more say.
Sometimes Rodgers would show to the meeting and other times he would just leave Matt sitting there with no word that Aaron wasn’t going to show up.

Brian Gutekunst said he tried to contact Aaron Rodgers “many times” this offseason to discuss how he fit in the Packers’ future.
“Our inability to reach him or for him to respond in any way — I think at that point … I had to do my job.”

What happens with Wilson in all of this?
Does he become backup or get shipped out?
I think it’s hilarious how bad he’s been after getting drafted #2 off a Covid season and one combine throw without pads

Don’t get why packers being so stubborn.
They should take that 2023 2nd rounder and run with it. The clause for incentive based 2024 2nd rounder is beyond fair value.

quote:"The Jets are negotiating, and impressively, I might add." They're doing it the right way, sticking to their guns, don't let GB BS you into something that will tremendously benefit them. You really don't know if Rogers will play in 2024 let alone beyond, so, stay the course and don't give them too much. I mean they really wanted Rogers and I guess had no choice but to bend over for Rogers and his requests, but enough is enough. What they're asking for from GB is fair, so, GB shouldn't have a problem with it.

So:
Rodgers, for 2 2nd rd picks, one which might bump to a 1st if they host a playoff game (pretty unlikely, looking at the AFC), AND the Jets want picks back if he doesn't play in 2024?
That sounds like the Packers trying to get rid of a headache, not the Jets coveting a guy to make a run next year. I get that he's old, but still, that really ain't much.

It’s becoming obvious the Packers are just over the whole Rodgers experience. They are going to pay Rodgers a lot of money to not play for them and get a pretty modest return.

If I’m Green Bay I’m forgoing any trade and making Rodgers suck it.

He'll play one season and maybe win one playoff game if they make it in. I don't think it's worth 2 second rounders but their fans are starved for a spot in the playoffs.

Yeah if I’m the packers I tell them I’m not budging off the 2 first rounders and I’m ready to bring rodgers back if that’s what it takes
Rodgers held them hostage multiple times over the years with this kind of drama, no better time to get some pay back than right now when the jets complain just say “welcome to the Aaron rodgers experience”

Yeah don't understand why the Packers would move an inch off whatever they want. They already have their QB replacement and Rodgers' huge salary is planned in their cap already. If the Jets don't have this done once we get close to training camp NYC media will be in panic mode applying pressure to the Jets.

Can you imagine the press conference from their coach when he has to announce Zach Wilson as the starter while rodgers is throwing on the second field somewhere in Green Bay during the 3rd week of the preseason

Make sense that the Packers shouldn’t budge…but I’m a little confused by how badly the Jets seem to want this to happen.
Obviously Rodgers is great. He’s also old, a PITA, has other interests outside of football and thus almost approaches Jay Curler levels of DGAF.
I feel like either he gets tired of the Jets or the Jets get tired of him and he retires after one year. Maybe it’s worth it, but what if he falls off a cliff production-wise?

That's way too much.
The Packers can't keep him at his salary. The Jets are so enamored with Rodgers, that they are bidding against themselves.
Until now, I really thought they were telling the Packers, "we'll wait as long as we have to. There's no chance we give up a high draft pick."

They are taking a huge L on the salary no matter what. They have him under their books currently and can keep it that way if they want to.
Even if the packers feel like they HAVE to trade rodgers, they still would need value for the salary they are going to have to pay to make the money work for the jets
The packers have a lot more leverage here than the jets.

They can't in all practicality. They were going to have to restructure if he stayed.
He'd be a guaranteed June 1 cut. Getting him now is worth something...but it's not worth a 2 and another 2 (which could be a 1).
Jets need to call their bluff.
