HVAC Pricing down in south Louisiana

Ponchatoula - 1800 SF house. I’m in Virginia so I know what it would run up here (much less than this quote) but every market is different.
She was quoted $8700 for a new HVAC system installed. Is this is a normal ballpark range for down there? And if not, who’s a reputable company that’s not going to take advantage of a 73 year old widow living by herself?

How many tons? What brand / SEER? Variable speed?
Is this just the evaporator and condensing unit replacement...or does it included ductwork, etc.?

We got our AC changed out on Tuesday, and I would love for the cost to be only $8700. We did get new ductwork which added a lot of cost, but AC is not cheap here.

No new duct work. Not sure on brand/seer etc but 1800 SF home and honestly she just needs something to get her through one year so she can sell the home.

That’s not a bad price at all. Based on size of house, and year built guessing about 3 ton unit single stage unit with gas furance for heat, 15 SEER (minimum federal requirement for the South as of Jan 1).
All electric heat air handler would be cheaper (assuming not a heat pump) to install than a gas furnace but more costly to operate. Price of HVAC equipment has dramatically increased the past 3 years, 30 to 50%, not to mention the cost of labor.
I had a change out last month, Trane, 4 ton, single stage, gas furnace, 16 SEER, addition of 1 new return air duct $13,500. I got 4 bids from reputable companies, both small and mid-size, each quoting a different brand/manufacturer, and 3 were 15 SEER units - all 4 bids were within $1K of each other.

sounds about right. got a quote for a 3 ton trane unit with no duct work for between 7-8K (gulf coast mississppi)

I'd be tempted to have several different techs look at it and see if she can band aid it until she can sell. An HVAC system should last a minimum of 15 years.

OP,
I shipped new system in June 2020 (pre-“inflation”) and just to swap out a 2.5 ton was around $6k IIRC. Reputable company who was on cheaper side of my quotes.
I’d get her another quote.
Side note - A certain Team quoted me $45k….

I was quoted in the BR area 4-5 months ago $21,900 3.5 ton Daiken with a 10 kw heat with a new return and some new duct work. Needless to say I passed

I’ll do it for cost of equipment and Materials $2,000 labor. That’s labor for myself and one other person split. I have done residential and currently work for a large commercial company. Get me a copy of the quote and I’ll find cheaper comparable equipment.

I saw older posts suggesting Nu Air and they had good reviews online. Their quote was good and they got to it quickly.

If it came to that, I'd discount the purchase price.

This/\. I put a new 4 ton unit in my house in 92 and did my own maintenance over the years and I replaced it in 2019 while it was still working fine.
I just got worried I was pushing my luck and replaced it in the early spring on 19 instead of chancing it going out during the summer months.
I got a 4 ton Trane 14 SEER with new duct work only enough to go from the unit to the supply plenum in my attic and it was $6700 and a 1 day job for the company that installed it.
