Pawn Shops - an economic indicator?

I was thinking today about what a huge lag the major economic indicators have by the time we get the numbers.
Has anyone noticed if Pawn Shops are getting a huge increase in people pawning their possessions? Would it matter?

You can add sperm banks too. Too bad I'm all tapped out.

actually i went to a pawn shop to buy a handgun. And they said the hocking part of the business is brisk, not so much on selling side.
They told me they basically only take guns, high def tvs and tools at this point. everything else is turned away.

I don't think that'd show up yet. One thing nearly everyone has (for now) that they didn't in the past is a credit card. When the credit card crunch comes, then the pawn shops will see more business.

I think you're right. The Pawn Shop "metric" is probably delayed, as well. But it is atleast an indication of the level of essential bill-paying income the lower and lower-middle class has. Although, most of the population do not sell their crap at pawn shops. Especially not in the age of ebay.
I was just trying to think of things to look at on the ground level..

What kind of guitar? I bought a small girlie guitar from a pawn shop a while back thinkign it would be a good "fit" but it vibrates too much due to its small size. i need a regular guitar.

There was an article on yahoo yesterday that talked about the surge of lipstick sales in an economic downturn. Seems that when a pair of Jimmy Choo's are out of reach, women will buy lipstick because it is waaaaayyyy cheaper.
And guess what? Lipstick sales are up 40%.

I'm just surprised you can get high def TVs at a pawn shop. You'd think there would be better placed to sell a high end item like that.
Well, I guess they could be stolen.

A friend of mine told me today that he went to a gun show in Shreveport last week and bought 1,000 rounds of 38 caliber bullets. Afraid that BO will ban them. He said business was very brisk.

Well, i don't think they get very many, thus why they buy them.
And who would buy a used HD tv, they have gotten pretty cheap already?

Man, you're right. I was thinking they were still over $1,000 new.
