I find it so bizarre that the D&D movies that have been made so far are both essentially parodies of fantasy films and not some sweeping, LotR style epic.

I think they're playing to the nerdy aspects of the property.

They're trying to make it funny, and say "see, this can be cool", and they're trying to expand the audience that way.
It's like they think, if they made it serious, nobody would even consider it. It's not LOTR or Conan, the two accepted mainstream fantasies.

Not saying it's right or wrong, but I can see them taking that angle from the marketing approach.
