Daughter got a cheap one for Christmas a few years back. We had fun with it, but I want to get more serious one with a pinpointer and really get into the hobby.

I have a Whites MXT Pro
The best detector I’ve owned was their Eagle Spectrum. So hot on silver and incredibly customizable programming. I don’t know why White’s went out of business in 2020 but they did. I would suggest buying up accessories like battery packs for your MXT Pro because they’re going to get harder and harder to find.

What things have you found?
Tons of musket balls/bullets, a couple belt buckles, horseshoes from horses the soldiers used, some buttons, a couple cannon balls, and some other stuff that I'm unsure of. My grandmother's property sits very near the site of the Battle of Kock's Plantation (St. Emma Plantation) in Donaldsonville. Sadly, it's sold now so I no longer have access but it was such a great piece of property to hunt relics on. I'd love to buy it back one of these days.

Tons of musket balls/bullets…
One of the cool things about detecting in the cane fields near Donaldsonville is the stuff you find visually like clay pipe parts, old clay marbles, etc. I saw a guy find a gold coin by sight while detecting in a field that was recently plowed.
Same thing goes for construction sites in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. If they tear up the dirt, no telling what you might find. They redid the parking lot at the Oentagon barracks years ago and people were finding buckles and buttons aplenty.

Damn, I've walked those cane fields many times after plowing and haven't seen any coins at all. Never ever found a gold coin anywhere so I'm pretty jealous.

Nice info on search coil types, mainly pro DD: DD vs Concentric Coils
