Keeping them there is a problem.

Also, prison life has gotten too comfortable for these hoodrats. They need to spend 16 hours a day turning big rocks into little rocks until their backs give out.

This! I’m not sure how “cruel and unusual” punishment is defined these days, but I think that the current consequences aren’t a true deterrent at all.

Yep. 100% this. Make prison a place that isn't fun to be. 16 hours a day pounding a rock or moving a dirt pile, then back again. No TV or internet and limited visitors. 3 basic meals a day.

Then, swift trials and if convicted, one appeal, then execution.
