PE class in the 60's and 70's were more fitness classes. We used to have to do shuttle runs, 60 yd dashes, pull ups, peg board, and mile runs every 6 weeks as part of our grades. Always started class with stretching, situps, and push ups before moving into whatever sport we were playing that month. That stuff was pretty easy compared to bailing hay and working cattle.

They’ve basically replaced the fitness standards with the Pacer test which is a shuttle run against the clock. My kids got upset in elementary school when the teacher would make them stop at 50 and not see how many they could actually get.

My neighbor is a P.E. Teacher (in her 60s no pics) and she says that they had to stop doing pull ups because a couple of kids nationwide injured themselves straining to do the pull up.
