I’ve launched at Joseph’s Harbor before and know the basic spots like LSU, Cement, and Mud Hole but I’ve never ventured out to the east end. Thinking about giving it a try this weekend, anything I should know about? Or does anyone have some insight about potential spots they’re willing to share?

Check the regs. I know most of it is closed for duck sanctuary in the winter. Little and big Constance weirs can produce.

Everything inside locks at Joseph Harbor is closed until March 1.

Sure enough, East end closes from Dec 1st to March 1st. I also just read that the East end is mostly freshwater. Had no clue about that, I’m mostly planning to target Redfish and Flounder anyway.

You can definitely catch reds and crabs on the east end though. I wouldn’t rule it out once it opens. Reds stack up on that end if we get some cold fronts before it closes in December.

With the east side inside channels closed, your options are limited. Rollover is the launch at the far east end and it isn’t a very good fishing location. It’s good when the shrimp are running through the weirs, but otherwise it’s basically a single channel. If the fish aren’t there at the time, that’s it.

I sometimes go out on Rollover and come up CopCop canal, but you can only reach it from the Gulf side and so you need a shallow boat and a flat Gulf day. I’ve done it in the spring when the winds come up mid morning and getting back across the Gulf is, well, exciting.

There’s also a real shallow lake on the Gulf side west of Rollover that I have killed the redfish in, but again, it’s very shallow so you need a skinny water boat, and when the spring winds or spring tides are in play, there are a lot of risks getting there and back.

I’ve actually fished Rollover Lake through that inlet you’re talking about in Flat Late. You aren’t kidding about it getting rough there. I think because of how fast it gets shallow in that little inlet the waves get brutal just right there in front of it. Makes leaving very “exciting” lol

You should be able to catch plenty of reds with shrimp on the bottom or under a popping cork. If you strike out on the east end, launch on the other side (Joseph Harbor) and fish up and down the rocks on both sides of the canal south of the locks. There's an opening in the rocks a couple hundred yards south of the locks on the same side where we've done very good in the past when the water's coming out of the marsh.

I passed by the other day and saw the east end is now open year round. Just found this for 2023.

quote:

A. Visitor Regulations
1. The visiting season on the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge will extend from March 1 to December 1 throughout the refuge except in those restricted areas designated to prohibit interference with research and management activities. Use of Humble Canal, Joseph Harbor Bayou, Headquarters Canal, East End Road and Locks, Union Producing Canal, Deep Lake, East End Boundary Canal, and Rollover Bayou shall be year round. In addition to this access, sport fishermen shall be permitted to enter the refuge from the Gulf side in Pigeon Bayou, Big Constance Bayou, Little Constance Bayou. Access through these bayous will be permitted only as far inland as the existing water control structures. The remainder of the refuge shall be restricted during the winter months and will be closed to all trespassing.

You have an idea of where I could find a map of the canals all named online? iPhone maps and Google Maps only have a couple of them named.

You probably already found this map but I'm pretty sure you can use any canal that's not marked in blue. I haven't been out by boat in a while, but they normally have pretty good signs marking the closed areas. Like I said earlier, if you're looking for drums and red fish you shouldn't have to go far. You could probably catch plenty from the bank. I know it's trashy, but we limited out at the locks and by the rocks where Hwy 82 turns into the east end locks a couple times this winter. Be sure to bring shrimp, if that's what you're using. There probably won't be any to catch in a net.

Can't use blue or purple canals until March 1st. Basically, can't use the entire east side unless you are entering from the gulf and fishing the gulf side of the Constance weirs or using Rollover.

Can confirm that fishing the East side locks from the bank can produce good reds at certain times.

The Asian crabbers get really mad when you go out there an operate the gate.

You might be right, but I'm pretty sure when I passed the other day they had a sign stating the launch was open on the east end. And the new 2023 regs seem to support that. I know the map says the purple is closed, but that map is dated 2020.
