inarguably the greatest military campaign of the American Civil War: Vicksburg.
Jackson’s Valley Campaign > Vicksburg
(And it’s not really even close)
quote:
Employing audacity and rapid, unpredictable movements on interior lines, Jackson's 17,000 men marched 646 miles (1,040 km) in 48 days and won several minor battles as they successfully engaged three Union armies (52,000 men), preventing them from reinforcing the Union offensive against Richmond.

From a purely military standpoint, free of bias and the prism of politics, The Valley Campaign was far and away the most brilliant campaign of the Civil War, and perhaps the greatest in American history.

Incorrect. It satisfied a strategic objective to be sure, but the Valley Campaign didn't do nearly as much as the Vicksburg Campaign in terms of winning the war. Jackson merely tied down an entire army and prevented it from reinforcing McClellan on the Peninsula (not that he would have done anything with the extra men anyway given his caution) by playing on the Lincoln administration's fears that a Confederate force would use the Shenandoah Valley as a backdoor to take Washington.
Grant captured an entire army, gained control of the entire Mississippi River, and split the Confederacy in two. His accomplishments in the Vicksburg campaign far outweigh what Jackson managed to achieve in the Valley.

Grant sacked a Gibraltar on the Mississippi with defenders and citizens hellbent on its defense.
Jackson was an incredible general and his campaign was impressive, but his success in 1862 came against a less motivated force with poor leadership, and was waged in his home turf.
Grant’s Vicksburg campaign is as creative, risky, and impactful effort as any in the war.

Darth, it does no good to debate with OP on the civil war. He is so insanely biased that it’s impossible to have a legit debate with him about it. He is seemingly incapable of giving any credit to Confederate leaders and soldiers.

Can we turn this into a thread where we come up with a detailed plan about how we would’ve won as the good guys
