I apologize in advance if already discussed, but is Skenes an every day player when not pitching? Is he getting any work at C?

What was his routine at AF? Did he rest on days after starting? I know that he was a part time catcher last season in addition to pitching and DH.

Jay has already said he wont catch here. So pitching, playing the field, and dhing are his options.

He routinely hit the day after pitching at air force. I think it was just a guess from some posters that he would take the day off after pitching. But i dont think thats true unless jay said it and i missed it. If he does do that, i think its more because we have alot more options at the plate early in the season that we want to get at bats for.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they are really considering him at catcher. It seems we have a healthy amount of serviceable catchers and is would be unnecessary to have him catch in addition to being a Friday night starter.

Then why not hit on Friday and Saturday, then pitch Sunday?

Because he is obviously the ace and you don't throw your ace on Sunday.

Because he’s potentially one of the best pitchers in the country this year. He’s also a stud at the plate, but he’s going to be a top 10 pick mostly because of his pitching. You throw a guy like that on Friday.

I'm sure he will be our #1 pinch hitter the day after he pitches and possibly when he pitches. Depending on the performance of the other players when they dh will deter if he is the dh the day after he pitches as we get in to conference play

You’re spot on. Jay talked about it in this interview I’ll link below.

“Every decision we make is to move us towards winning, but we’re at a place where we’re attracting some of the best talent in the country and it’s also my responsibility and our responsibility to protect that talent. Paul, I think, will be a 1st round pick as a pitcher, so we’re doing everything we can to ensure his health, his strength, his development, so that he can capitalize on that and have a good pro future. We have to be very smart about what we’re doing. He definitely could catch here. The first thing we did, we said your days as a catcher are over. The risk/reward for him and our team wasn’t great enough.”

He also mentions how good of a hitter he is and how tremendous his power is, but still said they’re always going to prioritize his preparation for pitching. He’s going to hit, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll always be both Saturday and Sunday after throwing on Friday. I’m sure they’ll feel it out as they get going. He’s probably still one of the best 9 hitters on the team, but thankfully LSU is blessed with plenty of options where they have the luxury of picking and choosing where they use him.

Edit: Here’s the link for the referenced interview. I highly recommend it as he talks about some other topics we’ve been curious about like Grant Taylor, Ty Floyd, Christian Little, Thatcher Hurd, and Tommy White.

I see no reason why he can't DH on Saturday after starting on Friday.

I'm all good keeping him fresh, but come post season I want as many AB's out of Skenes as possible.

Unless your “Ace” pitcher is also one of your best hitters.

So he’s fresh on Friday night. Instead of hitting and running bases for two games then pitching the 3rd

Because he is our ace. We will need him to be our ace to win it all. What if he takes a fastball off his hand? What if he pulls a hammy running the bases? There are a million things that could go wrong hitting so why take the chance.

I’d rather come postseason his arm is fresh to take the ball in game 1 of the supers.

Over use as a hitter/fielder was his biggest concern when transferring. The workload the staff pitches him was a big reason he chose LSU.

That and he has the potential to be the first or second arm taken out of the draft. You don’t pitch that guy on a Sunday.

I hope people learn to accept the fact that:

A- he will absolutely never catch at LSU

B - he's a pitcher first, and he's going to be protected like a stud pitcher should be

C - our lineup is filled with people who can hit. We will not all of a sudden start struggling to score runs because Skenes isn't hitting

Ding, ding, ding…we have a winner.

This, plus as has been mentioned, he is our ace and potentially one of the best pitchers in the country. He truly has the potential to supplant Crews as 1/1 for the draft. You don’t pitch that guy on Sundays in the SEC.

Jay hasn’t said it. This was started by something Hunt Palmer said on the On3 board. He has cultivated relationships inside the program, namely with Jay, and he posted what he was hearing was that Skenes would pitch Fridays, rest Saturday, and DH Sundays and midweek.

However, he also noted that it is possible for Skenes to see some ABs on Saturday in pinch hit situations, especially later in games or against lefties.

All of which makes a lot of sense to do. The only thing Jay has noted and been adamant about is that they realize Skenes’s future is in pitching and that they will do right by him and the team, and not over work him.
