It is 231 weeks since Germany invaded Poland. Here is what was going on 79 years ago during the week of 22-28 January 1944:

quote:

The U.S. VI Corps lands on the beaches of Anzio in Italy with little resistance. Caution in the high command, however, prevents a break out and German reinforcements are able to establish an effective perimeter around the beachhead by the end of the week. In the Soviet Union, the Red Army's successful offensive against Army Group North ends the 850+ day siege of Leningrad. More than two million people (soldiers and civilians) are estimated to have died in and around the city during the siege - mostly from starvation. Finally, in Ukraine, a Soviet offensive encircles more than 50,000 German soldiers near the city of Korsun.

Largely ignored battles there in Italy. I think it was Truscott that said that Cisterna was the most bombed place in the War. What a nightmare for those Marne men.

After the war my grandfather went into business with a man who was a veteran of the Italy campaign. He was in the 1st Ranger Battalion.

My father was there as well. It was his third and final invasion. We are Italian and, after the war was over, he found out he was fighting against his cousin.?????????

When my dad joined the Marine Corp he went home and told his dad. His dad hit him because he thought he would go to Italy and fight our relatives.

He did not go to Italy, but Iwo Jima.

Caution in high command

unfortunately this will be repeated time and again from Africa to Germany and cost tens of thousands of Allied lives

Mark Clark was not our best general, to say the least.

Gen. Mark Clark and gen. Lucas almost allowed the Germans to push us back into the sea at the Anzio beach landing.
