What a slimeball.
Well he is a former MP, its in their nature to be blue falcons.
Edit: and he managed car dealerships too. Who wants to bet one of them was off post of Fort Polk with a sign saying they finance E-1 and up.

I got the same canned response looks like.
I never understand this response. People think they are going to get a difference response to a question that has been asked probably by 100s of people.
Where in the world does that happen except for thankyou cards from your aunt.
Whatever the answer, it does not change because someone else asked the same or similar question.
Grow up, you are not that special.

That was the private, internal debate they had. Think of it as the "smoke-filled room in the back where all the decisions are made". Winning factions in Congress likely have done this for generations so they don't have to spend weeks dickering on the House floor. They get it handle (as much as possible) in private ahead of time, then show up and go through the theater of making it official.
How it works, is after the election, all the Representatives-elect meet in a very large room, have brief discussion, and then vote for speaker. If there are more than 2 people running, they will eliminate one at a time until they get a majority.
Gentleman's rules would dictate that whomever gets the majority of the majority caucus, all members of the majority would vote for that person in the formal house floor vote.
Recently here in Ohio for the last 2 speaker races, the losing side has made deals with Democrats and got the minority of the Republican votes elected as the Speaker of the House. The first time around, the Speaker got caught up in a massive campaign finance scheme related to a coal power plant bailout. That person is about to face a federal trial for RICO crimes.
We'll see how the second round of this style of electing Speaker turns out up here.
