Water heater expansion tank

Need to replace 40 gallon electric water heater and looking at doing it myself as i've done in the past at other locations. My current water heater doesn't have an expansion tank. However, was reading the online info on the one I plan to purchase and they suggested installing an expansion tank.
Is this necessary, a code requirement or just an optional safety feature?

Depending on your area it might be code. When we replaced ours about 10 years ago we had to add one per local code.

Required here just north of Birmingham as well. Wasn't when we bought the house 20 years ago, but had to add this when we replaced the hot water heater this year so it wouldn't be a hang up when we sell.

just had a 50 gallon heater installed, didn’t need one, hope this helps

Does system have a check valve? Had any issues of water dripping from washers?
If DIY, expansion tank is cheap and insurance. If no check valve then no need.

I thought you had to have an expansion tank with high temp heaters..as in right below boiling.

Someday somebody is going to have to explain to me how the water in a hot water heater gets heated before it gets to the hot water heater.

The adjective "hot" is modifying the noun "heater". "Water" is also modifying "heater".
The question should be "Why is the heater hot? Is the insulation not working?

I've had plumbers insist it was necessary when installing my water filtration/softener system at our new house and the quote was astronomical. Called another who then did it for 1/4th the price and said he'd never installed one before. This is in the Houston area. There's a pressure relief valve on water heaters. As an engineer I couldn't fully understand the need when most houses don't have them and I've never heard of failures due to water pressure from thermal expansion. Seems like a gimmick to me. But admit I'm not a plumber.

Water heater warranty will require it, spend the $50 and put it in.

I dont understand its purpose either. Is the concern that the hot water in the pipe will continue to heat up after its blocked in?
