I'd say SF is NOT a must for young kids. I think your oldest is the only one who would really appreciate things like the Bridge, Chinatown, and Alcatraz. The Wharf is very touristy and feels about like any super touristy spot (Times Square, parts of the Vegas strip, Gatlinburg, across from the Alamo, etc. It's nothing really major. Muir Woods is cool, but you can see the trees in Yosemite and Kings Canyon. Your kids will probably not know the difference. They will just be impressed with trees that large.

I'd skip Muir Woods do Kings Canyon and see General Grant instead of General Sherman in Sequoia.
