I just want to know where the logic used to justify losing games but being granted a mulligan on the basis of being the "best" team begins and ends.
Can a team rest their starters for the first half of a season and lose six games, but because they were #1 in recruiting for four straight years and dominate the back half of the schedule, we ought to let them in? Pretty extreme example, but I kind of feel like this is a fair question to ask of those who advocate for a model where team quality matters more than their resume.

Seriously how many losses do they get? If A&M beats them on the last play for example aren’t they still the same team? wouldn’t they be “better” with 3 last second loses instead of 2? So they should be in even at 9-3 if “best” team is all that matters

Yep. Bama fans think that because they would be favored against TCU they belong in over them for some reason.
LSU and Clemson would also be favored to beat TCU but aren't saying we should have been in the playoffs over them. We realize that results matter.
