Empire Strikes Back question(s)

After Vader cuts his hand off and Luke is dangling at the end of the platform, he looks down and let’s go.
Was he trying to kill himself? Or did he know that he’d be sucked into one of the tubes and slide down safely (relatively)? I always just assumed that he knew he’d be okay. But watching it just now it struck me that hearing about Vader being his father may have sent him over the edge. While I don’t think that’s the case, I figured I’d see what others thought about it.
Also, I don’t the remember details from RotJ too well. But I assume when Vader cuts his hand off that was holding the light saber, this is when he loses the saber and he doesn’t get it back until Rey gives it to him, correct?

Luke is beaten and shellshocked at learning the truth about Vader.
His choices are to submit or fall to his death. He chose death. Even when he was sucked into those catch tubes, he was still discarded by the automated system. Had he been unconscious, or not caught himself, he'd had fallen to his death.

He was trying to kill himself

I don’t know that he was trying to kill himself. He had two choices, fall or go with Vader. And he wasn’t going with Vader.

He was trying to land on top of the DeLorean, but missed

Bingo, because when vadar gets his saber back of course the first thing he's gonna do is lose it a poker game so some smuggler could fly it a few million light years away to a distant planet and trade it for some spaceship parts and coffee.

He was killing himself 100%.

If he didn’t get sucked into the tube he was going to Mary Poppins back to safety.

I don’t think Luke wanted to be what he was. He’d rather lose it than take on the burden of being the last Jedi.

Huh...never once saw it like that. I always saw it as having a choice between submitting to Vader or taking his chances of jumping and hoping for the best. I'm not saying he knew he'd live, but I never thought he was purposefully trying to die.

The original trilogy isn’t meant to be analyzed, it’s to be experienced.

Take his chance? What did a moister farmer from Tatooine know of Coud city's safety and security systems?
I'd invite you to revisit the scene. Luke JUST found out the truth about his father. He had his hand lightsabered off. He was beaten. Alone. Scared. He looks down and we see what he sees. Is it *possible* he was doing the calculations of surviving in his head?
The scene.

Ok so not so much “I want to kill myself” but more of “I’ll take my chances falling down there than going with Vader. Itll probably be death but let’s see”

That’s sort of how I’ve always seen it, as an “I’ll take my chances” thing. But when he looks down there is literally nothing in terms of a bottom that can be seen, and he lets go anyway. So at worst he takes the dive with the feeling that he would likely die.
I don’t know why, I just never looked at it like that really until today. I guess I just assumed from the comical way he’s sucked into the vent that it was a fairly normal thing. But like the person above said, there’s really no way he would know that (even with the force).
On the saber thing. How the hell does that thing end up found and not smashed into a thousand pieces after falling for miles?
Or does it maybe get sucked into a vent too and found some time later?

If my dad ever invited me to join him as a super powerful space wizard warlord, I’m joining him

Sounds like a prime example of JJ Abrams 'Mystery Box' story telling.
Never reveal things. Like how does a polar bear appear on a tropical island?

I'm not sure it was shot to give the viewer that sense. Even when Vader looks over at him, it's not "Holy shite! Dude just killed himself." Luke even looks down a few times like he's deciding if it's worth the risk. Not even Williams' score give you the sense that Luke is likely gonna' die.
He falls a bunch, then miraculously slides into the shaft. Whether it was reasonable or not, it's played as if it was a reasoned escape plan.

Huh? That was definitely answered.
