IMO. Bowl Games should be turned into preseason matchups.

Spring games are pretty lame. Some school already have tried to spice them up by scrimmaging another school as their spring game.
Bowl games have suffered as a result of modern college footballs evolution. Why not try and adapt. Rosters are so thin at this time of year for a majority of teams that would it not be more entertaining to take these same matchups and have next years rosters play in a preseason game?
I don’t want to act like I have thoroughly thought this through or that this is even an original idea. But I think it would be far more interesting to watch the 2023 lsu roster play a preseason game against Purdue than the watered down 2022 versions. What say tRant?

It sucks if you’re a senior with nothing else to play for, but it isn’t a terrible idea. The Playoffs and opt-outs have effectively tarnished the bowl schedules.

Pretty neat idea as football in the spring would be legit. Not sure everyone would be in condition for a competitive game or how they would handle the back ups. would be lame for seniors to miss out on one more game too (those that don't opt out at least!)

Why not do both? Bowl Games and a real spring game ag another school…

Why wouldn’t teams hold their starters out of this though? Sophomore Stud Starting QB (like Heisman winner Caleb Williams) injures ankle in bowl game you have plenty of time to recover.
If that happens in a preseason game his Jr year then your entire season is fricked for a game that doesn’t count.

Are you saying instead of a bowl game at the end of the season, that it decided who you played in week 1/week 0 of the following year?
Now that would be interesting. The games would actually matter again.

Won’t happen there is still money to be made from bowl games and ESPN needs the programming.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t think it really fixes the problem. If it replaces the spring game, star players and players with minor injuries would 100% be held out or have snaps limited. You’d be playing with more backups than we currently are in bowl games. For example, this year Kayshon will play the whole bowl game. If it was changed to a spring game, he would play the first half maybe.
If you are suggesting it be used to decide what teams should play each other week 1 of the next season, coaches/schools would absolutely hate that. You’d also have all of your most high profile matchups in the first week, which isn’t exactly a great product. And it would possibly force some teams to play each other twice in the regular season.

Make 24 team play off and this is resolved for the most part. Think, if the top 24 teams were playing for a championship there would be way less opting out.

I posted this exact same idea last year at this time. I think it’s a great idea.

Not a new take. Weak zero would b perfect fir many of these games.

Definitely makes sense for the bigger bowls. If the Rose Bowl wants to be relevant again, make it the pre-season kickoff between last year's B1G and PAC12 champions. Teams will be fresh and everyone will play, and it will have a real effect on the season.
The Gaparilla Bowl won't be relevant either way, so i'm fine with it being a silly bonus game on a tuesday afternoon after the season.
