Starting to plan a family trip to Glacier National park and possibly Lake Louise for next July. Kids are 9 &12 and we like to hike, fish, Kayak and do outdoor stuff. We have normally stayed in vrbos so that we have a kitchen. Would appanh advice on where to stay, what to see/do and any recommendations. Will have 12-14 days

Lake Louise is cool but lake moraine is better. Do the cold plunge at lake Louise on the far side.

Plan to arrive everyday at your lakes early as parking is tight

Recommend renting bikes and exploring that way also. Go white water rafting.

12-14 days plenty to do everything

next July

Make sure it is late July as it can hold snow there for a while. We were going to go back this year in mid July but changed because going to the sun wasn’t open yet.

We stayed in Apgar Village in GNP for two nights and it was great being in the park but them we moved to a condo at the resort on Big Mountain in Whitefish for 5 days after that. (link below) The condo was perfect for visiting the park, Whitefish etc and had all the amenities and access you would expect on a great vacation.

GNP is fantastic and the Going to the Sun road is right up there with the Road to Hana foe me.

Let me know if you ever get a Huckleberry Bear Claw in Polebridge!! Not the easiest dessert you ever get but worth the ride for the day to hit the store and visit some beautiful lakes on that side!!

West Glacier/Whitefish is cool and has more amenities (places to stay, restaurants, activities) but the East side (St. Mary, Two Medicine, Many Glacier) has better scenery and hikes. Try to spend half your GNP near the eastern entrance, even if that means roughing it in terms of accommodations and food. Weather in July can be a bit of a crapshoot - check the park website and they will have information on the dates when Going to the Sun Road has opened in the past. You definitely want to drive this road once. But also use the free shuttles as parking inside of the park is problematic.

Make sure your rental car allows for border crossing and drive up to Banff. Stop and spend a day at Waterton Park - an overlooked gem. You can spend a full week in Banff and not get bored. Lake Louise is beautiful but crazy crowded with foreigners and a pain in the arse. Stop by for half a day (preferably late afternoon when crowds have died down) snap some photos and get out. I would also recommend spending a full day driving the Icefields Parkway up to Jasper and staying there a few days. Lots of stuff to see and do along the Icefields Pkwy.

Note so you don't get out there and miss something you really want to do...

Glacier posted this on the official Instagram page a couple of weeks ago.

Visitors to Glacier in 2023 will need a vehicle reservation to access Going-to-the-Sun Road, the North Fork, Two Medicine, and Many Glacier during peak season.

Vehicle reservations will be available on Recreation.gov. Each of the specified areas of the park will require a separate reservation. Like last year, visitors will need to set up an account on Recreation.gov to obtain reservations.
