Central unit went out today

Unit is 15 years old and I have probably averaged $400/yr in maintenance, part changes, and recharging over the last 8 years.
Was quoted $2K to replace the heating element which has badly rusted.
A new unit installed is $8K.
What a Christmas kick in the nuts!
Bonus…it’s going to be in the teens here the next 2 nights!

That's the gift that keeps giving all year long.

That sucks. Space heaters in bedrooms with people to hold you over for sure. I’d bite the bullet on the new unit for sure.

Yeah…going with a new one.
I’m currently running our gas logs with the central fan on. The intake is about 8’ from the “fireplace”.

Could be worse. Could have crapped out in July. There's only so many clothes you can take off before you are just naked and dying in Hell.

You would have saved money if you replaced it when it went bad 8 years ago. Most companies offer a service contract that doesn’t cost anywhere near that.

I asked the HVAC guy if he could at least put a steering wheel on the new unit to make it seem fun.
My wife is planning to put a bow on it so we can run out to see it Christmas morning.

Does the central fan exhaust it or recirculate the air through the house?

That sucks! Just had to drop 4.5k to replace my sewer line.

Yeah, I got one of those.
The $14 part is free, under contract. Replacing it is $180.

All heat strips are rusted. If you are straight electric heat you might be taken for a ride. Its only the blower and the heat strips (plus contactor, sequencer, and hi temp cutoff). Most 5-15kw heat strips are in the hundreds of dollars range and readily available. And its a 10 minute job.
But its better than freezing your gooch off i guess.

I’d be more concerned with a unit going bad after 7 years. Whoever is doing the work 400 at a time is just making bank every year.

That doesn't sound normal at all. Sounds like you have been having issues for 8yrs but the AC guy was enjoying the regular work.

Need more clarification, is it a gas furnace or an electric heater?

15 years ago they were making turds so might as well get the new unit

It’s gas.
The igniter cant span the gap, so it just clicks for hours.

Turn the oven on to a low temp, open the door, make pallets on the floor by the oven.
Sleep comfortably.

I feel ya bud. No great time for a kick in the nuts, but right before Christmas is just insult to injury.
