I can only speak to the inverse, my first wife passed away and it was difficult to get into dating again, but I did and after 10 years I finally met someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I've now been happily married for 15 years.
Subconsciously I was always comparing dates to my former wife. It's unavoidable.

Why did this get a downvote... it's exactly the experience the OPs question was looking for

I met a man probably in his 80s last night (lovely man, insisted on buying me a glass of wine ) who told me his wife passed away 20 years ago. He said he's been married to his now wife for 9 years, and she's okay but his first wife was amazing. I was surprised at his honesty.
