Each state was recognized as being “ free sovereign and independent states” by the Treaty of Paris. The Southern States understanding of their capabilities for independence of action should be viewed through this prism.

Viewing the “Federal” union (the Northern tier of states in particular) as becoming destructive of their freedoms through tyrannical overreach one needs only to look to Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence for establishing the Southern States’s rightful dissolving of their ties to the Federal Union.
