We've always had a smaller rain gauge that is basically part of an artsy garden stand. A week ago I bought an Accurite jumbo gauge I mounted to a wood stake and placed a couple feet away from the old one.
With each rain the small one reads at least an inch more. Something ain't right?

I would guess the smaller is faulty. It certainly takes a smaller sample vs the big one. Of course I'm sure you have taken care to have them both in the wide open not close to any overhead things. Right?

We finally went to a 5 qt galv bucket marked for each qt. It's very accurate, Just need to measure the depth before emptying. Rain gauges lie.

Yes. Both are basically by each other, too.

Get yourself a CoCoRaHS rain gauge and join the network.

This is what I have - accurate to a 1/10th of an inch. Also have a an Ambient Weather WS-2902 WiFi Smart Weather Station. The weather station’s rain gauge and the CoCoRaHS rain gauge readings are usually within 0.1 to 0.2 inch of each other.
