For your run of the mill kind of club bands I would think the Caterie would work fine.
The Varsity has a little bigger acts.

As far as seeing pretty good bands on a regular basis, you need to get to N.O.

I am sure I am forgetting somewhere else.

Is there a worse decently big college town for live music, than Baton Rouge?

it's pretty damn awful

chelseas is great but you would think there would be at least 5 or 6 similar places around a college campus

but at least you know where the obnoxious douchebags will or will not be and can usually avoid them

not sure. I know of plenty places that are much worse, but they are smaller college towns. When i was in school i usually hit a show a week at LSU and was pleased, but that was when the Varsity spent less time doing retro-active shite. Varsity, Chelsea's, Tabby's, and Spanish Moon kept me very satisfied. Losing Tabby's really hurt.
