Tree ID from bark

Any ideas? Thick bark, comes off easy. I'm sure I climbed a younger one when I hunted yesterday, it had only a little of the thick bark at the bottom and was smooth as you go higher up. And yes, I pick up random big trunk sections to split and use in the for pit when I see them on the side of the road. These have been cut for almost a year, so some bark has come off.

Where did you find it? Parish? Habitat?

Brentwood TN, in with the other hardwoods.
Sugarberry looks right after some image searching. Thanks!

Could be sweetgum. Is the wood grain straight or wavy?

Sweetgum has one of the trickiest barks of them all. They can literally look like just about any other tree in the woods.

It definitely isn't a sweet gum, the layered/corky bark growths look like the sugarberry pics I see. Leaves of the ones I was in are gone, but there aren't any sweet gums in the entire area that I was in.

Agree. Or what I've heard called a Piss Elm.
They seem similar.

I live in Williamson and have a tree that looks very similar in my backyard. Mine is a Black Walnut tree.
