I want to take my kids on a European trip before they start squeezing out grandkids.

My preference is to get a large place in Rome, which allow everyone to sort of go their own way during the day.

Anyone done that? Is it feasible? Other recommendations?

My wife and I really enjoyed the Cook With Us In Rome class. Fun experience having dinner with strangers from other places.

If your gonna do the "house as a home base" idea- I would do that in Tuscany. Maybe get a hotel room or 3 for a couple of nights in Rome, but you can find a nice villa in the countryside and hit all of the beautiful Tuscan towns from Orvieto to Florence and everything in between.

I agree with the people who say that the home base should be in Tuscany. I had a great recommendation for this where I have stayed a couple of times. Unfortunately my favorite villa has recently been sold and is now a private residence. I posted about that on here a couple of months ago and in that thread our Tuscany experts suggested some wonderful looking alternatives.

We just stayed here last month and we had a great time. It is a bit rural. About 10 minutes from the town. 1.5 hour drive to Rome. 1.5 hour drive to Florence. About an hour to Sienna and 45 minutes to Montelcino.

Spend 4-5 days in Rome first and then move to Florence for 2-3 days. Rome has an insane amount to see, but we all like Tuscany for a more relaxing visit.

I’d try to include Venice on your trip. Absolutely incredible and could be gone in 20 years. You can walk the city easily. We took the train to Venice from Rome then flew back to Rome. Flights within Italy are cheap if you travel light and make travel easy but the train was nice and you could see the country side. You can take the train anywhere from Rome. I would think about starting in Rome for the first 4-5 days just because there is so much to see and do and then take the train to Tuscany or Venice. Subway in Rome is very easy to use since there are only two lines. Try to get a place near a subway stop.
