Rail service is subject to a lot of federal oversight regarding strikes, so they can’t outright strike.
A sickout is possible if they are already looking at a way out of their current position since doing so would accumulate a ton of points toward getting fired, which was part of the original complaint they wanted addressed.
The most that can probably happen is a slowdown. Not normally noticeable but doing so during the Christmas shopping season will bring the pain.

Still the question persists, if congress votes for them to go back to work, if they are regulated by various mandates....and they still call in sick, what can the federal govt do.
They had years to plan and couldnt figure out how to put a few m16s and some cash on a plane and get out of afghanistan. This same crew is going to handle freight for the largest consumer base in the world?????
And before you say, they will have the military handle it....I reference you to the previous paragraph, they were in charge of that logistics.....

retail items for Christmas aren't being shipped by rail.
But raw materials and coal are. Eventually consumers will feel the pain of a strike.
I'm not so sure a strike wouldn't be the best thing in the long run, if for nothing else to educate the masses how much we depend on coal. It might wake some people up.

Rebel, uh, umm, uh, You know all those photos showing the gangs breaking into railcars, ummm, that wasnt coal lumps they were taking out of the sealed rail cars...
