If it is 3 permanent opponents and 6 other games. Essentially that is the equivalent to a pod schedule they are just lumping all together for Championship game
seeding.

Call me a skeptic or pessimist, but the SEC could really play games with scheduling using this arrangement. I wonder how Alabama will fare once the conference starts working with new schedules and permanent games...

It's the equivalent of pods in that there are 3 perms. This set up allows every team to have a different 3 perm. Maximizes the preservation of rivalry games.

The difference is that in a pod, the 4 teams all have each other as their permanent opponents. With this, the permanent opponents are independent of one another.

Not a POD, in PODS, each 4 Team POD plays all the teams in their respective POD.

Each teams has their own 3 permanent opponents and rotate 6 each year.

THe conference will ultimately want to do away with a championship game and do what the big 12 used to do. Just name a champion based on regular season performance.

It's not a terrible idea to take an extra brutal game off your champion prior to play off run. We're essentially giving ourselves a first round Bye.

The conf champ will go, and it's likey 1 or 2 others will be part of the "highest ranked group of 5" teams.
