Santa Maria Conditions

I saw on the board a few months ago Santa Maria was having trouble with greens and just overall conditions. Was wondering if anyone had played recently and could give an update?

Such a shame if true. That course is on life support and it’s a shame because it can be a really nice (nice, not elite) course in the city. The clubhouse is a POS now. It’s practically abandoned. All the money BREC has, you would think they could keep things clean and looking good.

Clubhouse is weird. Probably still using the Covid excuse. I’d be pissed if I was a resident and they let the clubhouse go to shite like they have.

All of BREC’s clubhouses need a renovation (except maybe BC)

Being that they are tax payer subsidized courses, the clubhouses work just fine.

BREC is one of the worst run municipal park systems in the country, but somehow seem to fool the taxpayers and metro council into believing they run heaven on Earth.

They really are behind the times. Their parking and ingress/egress at Burbank soccer field is a joke. The amount of un or poorly used real estate they have is ridiculous. They have very few indoor basketball opportunities. Pickleball is a fast rising sport and they are still building tennis courts (they don’t maintain) in the hood of all places.

BREC is run by woke lefties.
They need to be run by savvy business minded folks.

I play SM weekly and unless you plan to play your entire round in the clubhouse, its fine. There are a couple of greens with healing spots on them (#7), but they have been placing the pins away from those spots. This latest rain should help the conditions a ton. The greens have been running really fast but should slow up with the moisture.
There- now you know about SM course conditions AND traffic patterns at the bluebonnet soccer fields.

It’s always sucked, they def missed an opportunity to make a lot of money with it. The neighborhood would support a bar and grill big time, they should have partnered with someone like walk ons and let them re do it and run a smaller version with a limited menu and bar.
That being said I lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and only played the course a few times

Years ago I was told that a favorite thing for developers to do was to take small plats of land that was basically unmarketable and to donate it to BREC and inflate the value for tax deductible contributions. For example, if a developer built a subdivision and had a strange area that bordered the plat, he would donate it and value it as high as the lots.
BREC never turned down any of these and now they are stuck with land they can neither manage nor keep safe.

during the Eugene Younger days his main passion was to get land for the BREC system...he turned down nothing...
