I never tie up. Refuse to do it. I let the ipilot hold us wherever we want to be.

It's hard to understate the usefulness of a spot lock trolling motor offshore. Its a complete game changer. You do have to keep the engine running and pay attention if you're up current though.

It's incredibly nice to be able to "anchor" upcurrent from the rig and fish off the back of the boat.

3 footers would be the limit in a bay boat for me, even then it’s downright dangerous and if one thing goes wrong you don’t have much margin for error. Hell, 3-5’s in my 26’ Glacier Bay is rough and that boat eats waves in a head sea. I won’t go out in the GB with a forecast of more than 2-3’s.
