Main questions:
Would the regime allow itself to lose a substantial amount of power (one of the selling point of progressivism is lording over your lessers) and tax revenue (see 1861)?
How would the atrocious national debt be handled?

I dont see the right starting a civil war. I do believe one will happen... when the government keeps spending sooooo much more than it takes in and the debt continues to grow.
We owe 31 TRILLION dollars now and when it gets to 60-70 trillion it will be unsustainable (to even make interest payments). With the spending we have had over the last 15-20 years it wont take too long to get there.
When the people on government assistance fail to receive their monthly payment they will be the ones to begin the riot. This riot will get out of control and I believe the country will revert to a more "tribalistic" form. People will only be concerned with their families and neighbors, they will give zero fricks about Washington DC or some far off city.

a peaceful divorce would be the ideal scenario but people are too cowardly and disorganized to allow it to happen

I don’t know what will happen but I believe that we are already seeing the beginnings of a divorce take shape. The beginning will not be a loud Fort Sumter like moment but it will be small acts of minor defiance from local governments towards the feds. I look towards somewhere like Florida or South Dakota where there exist governors with the courage to do what is right. If other governors (i.e. Texas, Tennessee) see this being done without consequence then I believe that this will start to catch some momentum.
