First, yes I know I'm getting way ahead of myself but this is the travel board not the TR or SECR so figured this is a safe space ha.

My only prior experience going to that area was for the Rose Bowl; on that trip I flew into San Diego since I had friends there and rented a car and drove up to LA/Pasadena. Then back down to fly out of SD. I'm doing an initial look at flights to LA for the weekend of the title game in early January and holy cow they are expensive. Right off the bat I can forget about flying direct out of BHM as that was fruitless. Flying out of ATL is no biggie though. Direct from ATL-LAX is in the thousands. Looking at doing the same as 5 years ago and flying into SD and renting a car is still going to be approaching 4 digits as rental car prices for 3 days are seemingly going to eat into whatever flight savings there are.

I know it's not going to be "cheap" (unless I fly a budget airline or have like 3 layovers) but man I was hoping to not spend 4figures just on transportation. Are there any tips for this itinerary? Maybe flying somehwere futher out than SD? Or booking on a certian day of the week or time of the month? Or a different airport than LAX?

What are your specifics dates? Travel during the holidays is the most expensive. You are looking at some of the most expensive travel dates of the entire year.

Going there: either 1/7 or 1/8. Preferably Sunday the 8th but if going a day earlier is cheaper that's great

Coming back: Tuesday 1/10

Could try Burbank, Long Beach, Ontario, or Orange County.

Might be able to find a cheaper flight than directly to LAX, but will almost certainly have a connection.

Didn't have time until now to take a look. Sounds like you've got a ton of flexibility on airports so that will help. Going to post some findings below. I'm going to highly recommend flying there and back on two one-way tickets due to costs.

Questions- Do you need a nonstop or are you okay connecting? Roundtrip looks like we can get you from birmingham for about $434 roundtrip and from Atlanta for $243 but that wouldn't include the baggage fee costs.

Birmingham to Cali on Saturday 1/7-
$227 on United Saturday afternoon to San Diego or LAX with a connection in Denver, $271 on American through Dallas Saturday night. Delta is only $349 for a connection in Atlanta? LINK

Birmingham to Cali on Sunday 1/8-
$227 on Delta into Ontario, $227 on American into Los Angeles or San Diego. Also $227 on Southwest for later in the day sunday LINK

Cali to Birmingham on Tuesday 1/10-
$227 again on United, Delta, Southwest or American from pretty much any of the airports. Depends if you want a redeye, morning, afternoon flight, etc which airline I'd recommend. LINK

Atlanta to Cali on Saturday 1/7-
$227 on United to Ontario, $217 on Spirit nonstop to LAX Saturday night, $299 on Delta for Saturday night nonstop to Ontario. LINK

Atlanta to Cali on Sunday 1/8-
$136 on Spirit nonstop saturday morning to LAX, $196 on United connecting in Denver to LAX, $299 on Delta to Ontario. LINK

Cali to Atlanta on Tuesday 1/10-

$80 on Frontier for an early morning flight, $107 for a nonstop on Spirit leaving at noon, $135 on Jetblue through JFK, $214 on American for a decent flight time. LINK

Aesome thanks. I would prfer not to fly spirit or frontier but I'll play around with Google flights, I always forget abotu that but that's a great tool.

One last question...I've only flown Delta and SW that's all I know, between American and United isn't one of them really bad and should generally be avoided? I know I've seen that on here before but can't remember which it is. It looks like there's a lot of options wiht United on what you sent.

Spirit or frontier are fine if you buy up to an exit row or the big seats up front. See how much those upgrades are, might be worth it.

I dislike American but in 2022 I surprisingly haven't had issues with them. Flying United over Thanksgiving so I'll find out soon how they're doing. Also a warning- some of the fares off Google flights are basic economy fares so you'd have to pay to bring a carry-on. It's usually $15-50 extra to get a normal economy for the carry-on, picking your seat, etc
