I don't see Appleby as a "lock".

I had Dutton on the outside looking in for a few reasons:

- Numbers crunch. Project is right that contributors will be left out. I think all of the incoming recruits have been guaranteed a spot, and the rest of the returners are ahead of him. I like him more than Collins, but Johnson placed Collins ahead of Dutton by year-end.
- In trying to read the fall scrimmage tea leaves, it anecdotally seems like Dutton, Edwards, and Hellmers have been given very similar opportunities in terms of who they throw against, how long they throw in each outing, and when each outing occurs. To me, that seems like they are competing against one another, and as of now Hellmers has the best stats.

One other interesting note on Hellmers. While he's entering his third year, his age is much closer to a sophomore (summer birthday). Maybe, he's starting to fill out and add velo, which is why he's pitching a little better. If he's at 93 in the fall, that could translate to closer to 95 in the spring, which he never sniffed even in his Freshman All-American campaign.

I see him as a potential redshirt. I'm not sure if his health is still entirely sorted. A year to get right health-wise and learn under Wes could have him throwing gas in 2024.

ETA: The model for this would be Ben Joyce. He redshirted after transferring in from JUCO and used that year to get healthy, dial in his control, and get better with a second pitch, in addition to adding velo. He had TJ surgery, so it's not apples to apples, but it's close enough.

I appreciate this type of analysis.

They ought to open a transfer window for baseball players in December after fall practice

No one can transfer now and play in the spring
The next transfer window is after the season which hurts the player

Thank you. That means a lot. I followed this board from afar when I lived away for years before ESPN came in to broadcast most games. Yourself, Rabbit, Scuba, and many others were my link to LSU baseball.

Wasn't aware Appleby was a Redshirt injury risk. I figured since he was throwing some in the fall, they had deemed him good-to-go. Could be where Edwards, Hellmers, and Edwards are competing for 2 spots instead of 3. Or, we hold on to all 5 "catchers" because we believe some may move to corner OF or 1B

Hellmers has also been working with a lower arm slot. He’s got more movement but is working on his control. It was noticeable when I saw him pitch a couple weeks ago.

Frey has been at 1B way more than catcher. I don’t think Milazzo Jones Neal or Travinski are in trouble. Travinski could be our best RH bench bat.

Lower arm slot for Hellmers would be welcome news if it creates more movement. Had one of the straightest fastballs I've ever seen. Got away with it in high school when nibbling the corner meant the other batter's box rather than the true corner of the plate.

Dutton isn’t going anywhere. He’s a different type pitcher than other guys and coach loves him

He has not pitched well this fall.

Yeah. I don't see Appleby having much if any impact this year. He was 89-90 with his fastball last weekend. He pitched to 2 batters and was shut down.

Nothing about his stuff popped. The tilt of someone 6-7 is a positive though.

If he was only 89-90 then there has to be still something going on with his health. He's a big armed guy, he was hitting mid 94 his fall semester in JUCO. If he's barely scraping 90 right now he either made a significant mechanical change or he's not all the way healthy.

This makes me lean even more into thinking he should redshirt.

ETA: And (only kind of joking) if pitching doesn't click for him, he can go the Nick Storz route.

Hellmers throwing 95 is a stretch imo, but I could be wrong there over time. Hellmers has been 91-92, but may have touched 93 this fall.

Edwards has been consistently at 93 and touching 94.

Credit for the stats go to BayTiger. Through the first 10 scrimmages, Hellmers has been about half point better in WHIP than Dutton who was a half point better than Edwards.

All 3 haven't really been too good.

Hellmers - 9IP 7ERA 1.56WHIP
Dutton - 7 2/3IP 14.09ERA 2.09WHIP
Edwards - 8 2/3IP 11.42ERA 2.31WHIP

If any of the three throw meaningful innings, either vast improvement has occurred in a short period of time. Or, something has gone terribly wrong. Not an indictment on any of Hellmers, Edwards, or Dutton, but more a testament to the depth that Johnson has built in two abbreviated recruiting cycles.

We will never need five catchers. That's a start.

You really only have 4. Frey hasn’t been catching much if at all.

Milazzo and Neal have caught 10 games. Travinski and Jones have caught 7. Frey has caught 2.
