Life is just a crap shoot, some people despite everything will live a long time and at the same time a lot of people will do the "right thing" and die young. there are things that definitely help live longer but it won't guarantee seeing 94, but the biggest factor is just luck of the draw.
ETA: specifically in his case the fact that he was dirty as frick is probably what kept him alive, no one and their germs would go near him. his "pig pen" cloud around him gave him a buffer from the rest of the shite out there. Only good germs are your germs theory.
