The game was less physical and involved less effort.
The players also didn't put the same force on their bodies b/c of less developed athleticism.
Also, as has been stated, players rest to extend their careers and avoid major life-altering injuries.

Question… do you need a deeper rotation now to win as opposed to back in the day?
I bet more players now play 500+ minutes in a regular season than ever before
