I once had a discussion with a coworker from Michigan (that wasn’t black) about the plight of black folks in general and how they are treated.

I said she didn’t actually understand (I’m a white guy BTW)

She asked “Have you ever been on the receiving end of violence because of the color of your skin”. I answered yes.

Then she said “but you’ve never been harassed by the cops because of the color of your skin”. Wrong, I was pulled over on Christmas Eve by two black cops becaus I was in the “wrong” neighborhood.


She then said “but no one has screamed racial slurs at you”. Wrong… happened in my front yard in NOLA more than once.

Then she topped it off with “No one has ever refused you service because of the color of your skin”. Wrong again. This has happened multiple times and as a matter of fact, happened two weeks ago in Baton Rouge.

At my kids school several years ago the parents had a discussion about race and how the parents were treated. I sat quietly the entire time but realized that I had more examples of being treated badly because of the color of my skin than any black person in the room.

Or the folks that treated me that way were just assholes and treated everyone that way.
