Coach Caskey’s Clicker
This is a good breakdown and discussion of some film from the UT game. Really interesting to hear some of Rohan’s comments on JD. You can skip to 1:30. It’s about 45 minutes long, but worth the watch if you have time. Just wanted to share.

JDs eyes are off the WRs before the WRs are out of their cuts/into the route where they expect the ball to be thrown.
No bueno amigos.

Their was an end zone camera replay on his first long scramble vs Auburn where he’s looking left but we had no WRs on that side of the field. A lot of times he’s pretending to read coverage but really just waiting for a lane to open up so he can take off.

I'm about half way through it but so far I would say this confirms my thoughts on Denbrock not being the issue. There are things that could be better, but for the most part the designs are good. Execution is terrible, and it's never at the shoulders of just one player. There's consistently too many missed assignments from the OL, to the receivers, to the QB, etc etc.

Another thing of note, I don't really see the OL getting beat a lot one on one. It's a lot of missed assignments. DL stunts and the OL doesn't get off their first block quick enough, for example. When we say camaraderie on the OL is essential, this is why.

We’re calling too many pass plays out of too many 4+ wide sets. You’ve gotta take some pressure off of JD, the Oline and the defense by running the ball. Daniels has 42 more rushing attempts than the next runner, he averages just under 13 per game. RBs need more attempts and Daniels’ needs more designed run calls instead of scrambles.

I'm only on 2 I think and both were bad designs (the 2nd, the long fake crossing route on 3rd and one was even called bad by Rohan)

The running game via RBs has been bad. REAL bad.

I don't think the differential is all that staggering. In P5 games Jayden has ran it 16 times on average (16 times exactly in every single P5 game, interestingly enough) and the RB's average 19 carries. Against State and Auburn they ran it 25.5 times per game, which is probably more where they want to be at.

The problem is most of Daniels runs come off of scrambles. Some go for bigger plays but a lot of them are stopped at the line, behind it or turn into throw aways. His ypc on designed runs is more consistent and actually very good. On early down calls instead of HB dive or the inconsistency passing the ball use Daniels legs to get us in favorable situations. First down all season hasn’t been very good.

Fair point. I was referencing his looking down to the protection/pocket and then over-reacting to the pressure too soon. He just needs to hang in there/slide away from the pressure for maybe another second with his eyes downfield.
Guys are getting open, he's just not looking downfield to see it consistently.

If nothing else, LSU receivers are good at running game day wind sprints. I hope JD proves me wrong & really soon, but he's not going to push the ball down the field. He did make some good throws this year, although it is very few of them. He's a serviceable QB @ best.

Thanks for the link.
Very interesting to hear former NFL guys evaluate the film.
Ro gave great insight, and confirmed what a lot of us are observing. JD has the ability, but he doesn't understand what is required of him.
He doesn't move well in the pocket, he doesn't read defenses well enough to see a WR about break open. He doesn't read blocks whether in the pocket or running.
On the TD to Malik that got called back, Ro points out the JD caused Jones to hold by going outside when it wasn't necessary. Had he slid up in the pocket and made the same throw the TD stands.
It's not any one thing with JD. It's a bunch of little things.
What I suspect is the game hasn't slowed down for him yet, and that's a problem for a 4th year starter.

He won’t improve. He is a veteran qb and still can’t read a defense or go through progressions.

I hate to harp on the fact that JD is to blame, but I don't know how you watch some of his film and point the finger at many other people. He cannot move the ball vertically. I do not even think it is from a lack of ability, but the fear of making a mistake. He is able to nickel and dime the defense because they can keep everything in front of them. Our offense provides ZERO threat to score. I am not saying that Nuss or Howard is necessarily the answer, but you can only drive with a flat tire for so long. I would like to see what one of the other two qb's could do given a week of game prep.

So is Rohan racist too?

I think, as fans, we all would. But as unlikely as it is, we’re still 2-1 in the SEC and control our own destiny. It’s not time to just start trying to shite “to see what happens” if they truly believe Daniels, despite his obvious faults, still gives us the best chance to win each game.
