Following, as I'll likely be there in a couple weeks and have an afternoon/evening free. Would love some recommendations on neighborhoods to visit for breweries, cocktail bars and restaurants.

Two suggestions for spending an afternoon in Vancouver -
If the weather is nice, go to Stanley Park and walk the trail along the waterfront,
or
take the boat to Granville Island and hang around there for a while.

Ferry to Victoria. 90 minutes each way and $17 fare. It’s beautiful. You sail through a bunch of islands thick with trees and cabins. It’s a big ship and moves slowly, o worries about seasick.

If these three are the priority, the area in Yaletown around Mainland St & Hamilton is a solid area.
Lots of outdoor patios & rooftop bars overlooking the street. Yaletown was our home base for exploring the city back in 2016.

Just took that ferry on 10/1… decent idea but be prepared for ~$350 Canadian in taxis to and from the port and to downtown Victoria and back.

Yeah. Victoria is a great vacation destination. One time before an Alaskan cruise we went up a week early and divided our time between Vancouver and Victoria. Beautiful place.
The only reason I didn’t suggest that before is because he just has one day there.

There is a coach bus for much less on the island side and the subway goes about halfway on the mainland side, then grab Uber or taxi.

Granville Island Market is a great place to hang for a few hours. Be an easy decision for me.

Any neighborhoods you'd recommend? Quick search telling me Kitsilano and Mt Pleasant are good choices. Admittedly, I like getting outside of downtown cores and seeing the neighborhoods in places I visit.

Both will work for what you’re looking for…maybe slight edge to Kitsilano but I don’t think you can go wrong

Yep, great market. The Go Fish seafood stand just across the bridge has LONG lines but worth the wait IMO. Had lunch there, bought veggies and pasta from the market, and spot prawns right off of a boat for dinner one night.
Stanley Park also worth checking out, and the waterfront.
Eat a Japadog if they are still around!
