[quote]Why didn't your Dad introduce you to all of the greatness of The Duke?[/quote/]

My Dad was a WWII vet and he hated JW with a passion because he played military badasses but never actually served. Dad had a lot of respect for Jimmy Stewart and Glenn Ford and some others. But he had disdain for John Wayne. I guess it rubbed off on me because I don’t hate him but I don’t see him as a great actor or heroic type.

That's like me hating Russell Crowe because he was never a real gladiator like me.

And Roy Rogers wasn't a real Cowboy.

And Christopher Reeve couldn't really fly.

My Great-Uncle was a Marine in the battle of Okinawa during WWII and loved John Wayne movies...and loved Sands of Iwo Jima. Even if soldiers could think it corny...he just liked the persona and story being told. That's an actor's job.

Frankly, this is a silly criticism. Like my grandparents, little too young for WWI, little too old for WWII. He primarily played cowboys, rather than "military badasses". Should he be ridiculed for not being a "real" cowboy?

Should Peter Falk and Telly Savalas have been ridiculed for not being "real" cops? Should Steve Buscemi be limited to only playing firefighters?

Silly take is silly, despite your father's wartime service.

So was mine. In combat. In Europe. And, he always took us to movies and, usually anything with John Wayne in it. Mostly, for the entertainment, but occasionally the message.
