Hey that step is a damn game changer when you’re loading a deer in there by yourself.

This is a Toelke Whistler 58” 2-piece, made by Dan Toelke and his son Jared. They’re incredible craftsmen and even better humans. They were super helpful and accommodating; 55#@29”. It zips these XX75s at a blistering ~155 fps. It’s super quiet though. If you look at the pics I posted earlier, you’ll see the exit wound. The entry wasn’t much higher. I’ve noticed they don’t duck the string nearly as much as I’ve seen with other bows, even recurves. It’s just a low-toned “thud” when I release.
ETA: Bocote veneers and the handle is G-10. Think it weighs like 2 lbs and this is heavier than the one piece. Comes in handy when you’re having to stand like a statue. I had 20+ deer around me yesterday. I just stick the bottom limb in my thigh pocket and let the string hang off of my finger. Can’t do that with an 8 lb compound.

I have a 68” yew core, cedar veneer longbow getting made right now. Wooden shafts is my next endeavor.

Great kill. I know it takes a lot more patience than I have to kill one with a long bow.
Also put some clothes on those boys!

Congratulations! A heck of an accomplishment! I picked up a traditional bow 22 years ago and have never looked back either! I have killed deer elk hogs and a number of other game animals.I know full well the time it takes to complications such a feat!

That’s awesome. I wish I had started much sooner. It’s a blast. This is my third year doing it. I know one thing. It’s made me a different hunter (a better one).

How much does your arrow weigh? I have a bunch of recurves and I have hunted with a few, but have yet to get a deer with one. Shot under a buck a few years ago. You have a longer draw length and weight than I could handle. I remember my arrows were in the 145 fps range.

Those are 653 grains, but it wasn’t on purpose to get them that heavy. Just what tuned out. I’m building some footed carbons right now that’ll be around 620. This particular bow just likes a heavier arrow. I shot around 550 when I went and did the TAC course back in the spring.
10 gpp is kind of the rule of thumb for hunting arrow weight on North American big game. Bunch of dudes using 450-500 setups that do just fine as well.

Nice. Nothing like a tradbow kill. I have a 3 piece Acadian Woods recurve I love to shoot. Toelke makes a fine bow.
