Seeing Lutz struggle is really painful

Lutz has been automatic for years for us. He’s been one of the most reliable players on the team. But now he looks like an average kicker at best. I’m hoping this isn’t permanent struggles because of the injury. Kicking is a weird thing though because it’s as much mental as it is physical.
We really need him to get back on track. Kicking will be what wins or loses us at least 2 games this season.

its really difficult for a kicker to come back from such a long layoff without some struggles. But he hasnt been put in the best situations either. Zero attempts from inside 20 and 4 of 6 from over 40 yds.

He ended 2020 in a skid. He may be done.

the knock on him all along was he was a great kicker but had a very low trajectory, so it was easy to block his kicks if guys get their hands up.
payton helped him with that by making him spend 2 weeks kicking in front of a fence to get his balls up higher and he did very well after that
it would appear, after his injury, he is back to his old bad habits of kicking balls very low again.
the trouble is there is no head coach for this team to handle the larger picture of things and so many areas of this team are falling apart everywhere just on practicing the simple basics alone.
we have a team with no head coach at all and a DC as acting HC who has no clue or ability to be a HC

For a short period of time when Lutz first arrived, he had issues getting the ball up off the ground quickly. He always had a leg.
That's what I've seen so far. Many of his kicks have been too low for comfort, and the one that was blocked shouldn't have been blocked.
Obviously, he's coming off a major injury. And, that should be considered. But, at some point, you have to face reality. The guy has had a long time to get healthy. The miss is less of a concern for me.

Gotta have game reps to correct but offense isnt giving him enough opportunities. The block was likely going in and the other seemed rushed…

This happens with kickers all the time. Usually when they get like this, they don’t come back from it. Hopefully Lutz will be an exception.

It's already lost the team 2 already.

I've never thought of him as "automatic." He's always good for a big miss or two in the most critical games. I could never figure out why Payton was so in love with him. He went on a real long streak a few years ago, but outside of that, he never reached elite status.

Payton sucked at picking kickers. He had Zach Hocker and Dustin Hopkins dueling it out and he chose Hocker. Hocker ended up attempting only 14 kicks in his career. Hopkins is entering his 8th season in the league and has attempted

So if we need a 90 yard field goal to win, we're good then? Lol

Well now he knows what to do to correct the issue. Lutz is the most fixable part of this team’s struggles.
