I don't think they could have afforded the 2.5 mil or whatever they were paying Napier after covid.

Yep. They were definitely in a position to attract someone to that spot.
The talent level in the south is huge where even the scrubs leftover after the SEC picks it clean is still more than enough to build a 2000s Boise or TCU-esque team once you have the foundation and reputation.
Reminds me of Tulane going with Scelfo after Bowden left (tho at least Tulane had a decent coach in house they could have gone with instead)

It still baffles me that they made that hire. Frickin Louisiana ADs can't get our of their own way. McNeese had the lazy hire back in 2015 with Lance Guidry that basically destroyed the program. LSU went with Ed O--we all know where that situation is now. And now ULL.
Baffling hires all around.
