I'm somewhat close to retirement. I'm in the state pension [lasers] under haz plan.

Would I still get my social security from years worked beforehand?

Can you put monies from a 401K and my deferred comp into my Lasers account? If yes, is this a good option.

I'm retiring but will look for another job. How would this affect my retirement?

Thanks, just trying to see my options.

Lasers has a guide that will help you figure out what the state retirement will do to you social security (or Google Louisiana state retirement social security). It’ll depend on how many years you have put into the social security system. It could be a big hit on your social security.

If you have enough credited quarters. I believe you need 40 quarters to qualify. You can check out exactly what your social security will be online by setting up an account with SSA...

My Social Security

If you are really close to getting the 40 quarters, you may want to go back into the private sector to get you up to the 40 quarters either by taking a side job, earning money through your own side business, or just working a few more quarters after you retire from the state.

This. The My SSA site is really helpful at seeing what you are eligible for and has some calculators also.

It depends on the amount of your pension.

If you mean putting into your pension.........NO. You can add any unused time to your pension.

No. Your monthly pension amount will be based on years of service. The amount of money you have in the plan means nothing over the long term as all that money will be traded in for a lifetime pension.

As long as you don't take another job that pays into LASERS, it will not change your retirement.

Thanks for you advice. Yeah I'm looking into the airtime option. Just burnt out after 21 years as a LEO, moved up and now politics has done me in. Time to make a move.
