I think I read fractures in the cartilage between the ribs but haven't seen anything else so not sure. Hyperbole of the media might say 4 fractures in the back for that.
Otherwise, if it is simply (yeah, I know, simply ) bone fractures in the vertebrae with no displacement or bulging or ruptured disc, the can do a surgical procedure called kyphoplasty which uses a balloon to spread the fracture and fill it with bone cement. You can go back to normal function the next day after that. I know about this because about a year ago my wife fractured 3 vertebrae boating and that is how it was repaired. My wife was 54 at the time and recovery was immediate. Doctor said there were 0 restriction after the surgery.
