OK, as an old school Catholic who left the church 30 years ago I need to add some insight here. It's not lib/con politics. It's a way of judging right/wrong and relativism.
Think of jury selection data. If your client is guilty of murder you do not want people from certain occupations...like a military vet. It's because those people have mindsets that are sharp line instead of fuzzy. They see right/wrong very clearly vs. moral relativism or subjective interpretation.
Ask: 'Is it ever OK to have sex with a rabbit?'
Old School Catholic: 'No.'
Protestant: 'Well, I'd need to know the circumstances.'
