quote:I graduated in 1983, so I missed being there in person for Humphries. I did see Tag Rome, a Ruston kid, catching the winning TD at Tech his senior year. John Holman was the QB when I was there. He's in the ULM HOF. John Holman NLU HOF
Stan Humphries and beating up on Tech
quote:They ran an exciting offense during the eras of Coach Crow and Coach Collins. Both recruited some great transfers, including QB's named Humphries and Brister. The games were fun to go to even if they lost. You almost had to stand for the duration of every offensive series, because when the QB threw the ball up, everyone stood to see if it was going to be a big play. That was the Golden Era of NLU Football.
Becoming a starter late in his rookie season, Holman went on to establish 22 ULM passing and total offense records by the time he concluded his career in 1982. He also set the all-time Louisiana collegiate record for pass completions in a state known for great quarterbacks. He completed 593 of 1,201 passes for 7,827 yards and 51 touchdowns. His yardage total ranked 7th on the NCAA's all-time collegiate list when he concluded his career.
I went to all of their home games, and a few on the road, during the three years I was there. I was still more of an LSU fan because I grew up an LSU fan. Even as an NLU student, LSU losses were tougher to take than the NLU ones. Most of my fraternity brothers were LSU fans first too. A few of us used to tailgate together at LSU games in the years after we graduated.
I was happy when NLU won, and was proud when they won the 1 AA championship after I moved to Dallas. I was working in sports media, and a lot of the guys I worked with were North Texas grads. That team had to play UNT in the regular season (won 24-23) and two weeks later in the first round of the playoffs (won 30-9).
I've only been to one game since I graduated, but was living in Dallas for most of that time.

Chinese…we literally may know each other. I’m the same age as Annalisa Crow. I was Greek. My freshman year was 79-80. I remember watching Tag Rome play. Bubby Brister’s girlfriend lived downstairs from me. If I don’t know you, I’m sure we know the same people. Hubby and I lived in Shreveport and went back to most of the home games that championship year.
I completely understand about LSU. Was always a fan as my dad went there and my uncle was a sorta well known coach in the 40s. Pretty well known around Monroe as well.
