Hawaii recs

We were looking at traveling to Hawaii next summer with our 3 kids. What island(s) should we prioritize and things to do in each? Would like 4 days around Honolulu and 3 on Maui (or vice versa) be a good way to go about it?
We would want to spend some time just relaxing and taking in the scenery on the beach but also get out and do some waterfall hikes/volcanos etc...
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Honolulu will be best for the kids. Maui is more for you and the spouse

What's the best way to get around? Do you need to rent a car or are things pretty central with good public transport options?

Depends on where you stay...
When we went last summer there were no cars available at the airport so I used Turo. Because of the traffic it took almost 2 hours to get to the Northshore around 10am but when I left earlier (7) it was fine.
If your around Waikiki then a lot of walking distance with the zoo, aquarium, beaches, and shopping. Uber and Lyft are available along with taxi's but each took about 20-25 minutes to show up.
We did an all day around the island tour which was nice, a little crowded in some spots as all of the tours go the same route.

I would do 2 full days in Honolulu - one day at Pearl Harbor and hire a private tour guide - they are so good and invested in the entire history - one of my kids was bored stiff, but the other was all in to it
Maui beaches and snorkeling can be great for kids. Depends on where you are staying and such but there is also great ziplining and off road ATVing that they may like. I would not take them to Hana or full day excursions because I have found they want to snorkel or body surf

Plan on renting a car for both areas based on your wants. The “beauty” and hikes are outside of the touristy and commuter areas on Oahu/Honolulu. You are going to need to get out to experience those items and while there is a robust bus system it’s not really allowing you quick easy trips to those hikes and beaches etc.
Maui is also huge, but with less main roadways. Think it was a 3 hour drive from the main city to a beach we wanted to see on the opposite side of the island

Kauai is our favorite island followed by Maui. We have been to Kauai 8 times and started taking the kids when the oldest was 17 and the youngest was 8. We went to Oahu once and would not go back knowing Kauai and Maui fit our vacation preferences more. Kauai is geographically the oldest of the public islands and is great because you can get from the south end around Poipu up to Hanalei on the north end in 1.5 hours.
Now, if your kids need a lot of stuff like you would find in.a touristy place like PCB in Florida, Oahu is your ticket. If they would enjoy shallow water snorkeling (Tunnels Beach is awesome), ATV rides, river kayak trips, easy hikes or coastal bike path rides, etc.., Kauai can’t be beat. Our kids always look forward to those excursions. Fortunately for me, my one son is now 17 and plays golf and shoots competition shotgun so I will start playing a couple of golf rounds with him on our trips there in the future as well as getting in a round of sporting clays on the mountain course.

Planning 1st trip to Hawaii in December the week before Christmas. Want to go to both Maui and Kauai and will rent a condo and car on each island.
What you recommend as far as splitting the ratio of # of days in each island? If you had 8 nights would you do
4 and 4, 5 and 3 etc..
Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated.
